Most of us have seen it somewhere. Hopefully, none of us has fallen prey to it. But it is a “thing.” It happens. People have it. And people act on it and with it. What is it? We are talking about an exaggerated sense of one’s importance. This often leads to excessive claims or actions. It can coincide with a disrespect for others and the overstepping of boundaries or taking undue liberties. We are taking here about the sin of B.I.G., the sin of “brazenness,” “impertinence,” and “gall.” When this sin is committed someone usually gets hurt; sometimes a lot of people get hurt. It can crop up in the context of commerce, religion, sports, and politics, even in interpersonal relationships and in churches. Jesus, too, witnessed this and told his disciples the parable that is today’s Gospel text. Knowing how the sin of B.I.G. can manifest itself provides us with a means of diminishing its influence and power.
