If people can’t see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves;
But when they attend to what he reveals, they are most blessed.
1Now during those days, when the disciples were increasing in number, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food.
2 And the twelve called together the whole community of the disciples and said, "It is not right that we should neglect the word of God in order to wait on tables.
3 Therefore, friends, select from among yourselves seven men of good standing, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this task,
4while we, for our part, will devote ourselves to prayer and to serving the word."
5What they said pleased the whole community, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, together with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch.
6 They had these men stand before the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.
7 The word of God continued to spread; the number of the disciples increased greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.
8 Stephen, full of grace and power, did great wonders and signs among the people.
1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.
...
4Now
there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
5
and there are varieties of services, but the same
Lord;
6
and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.
7
To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
12This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
13No one has greater
love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends.
14You are my friends if you do what I command you.
15I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the
master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything
that I have heard from my Father.
16You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you
to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in
my name.
17I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.
