Community Outreach at Calvary

Calvary Lutheran Church believes God is calling us into the world — not away or apart from it. Our community outreach programs give us ways to serve and love the community where we live and worship.

Every day, the people of Calvary are putting their Christian faith into action.
We partner with local and international organizations such as Cooperative Christian Ministry, Winecoff Elementary School, Samaritan’s Purse, ELCA World Hunger Appeal, and Habitat for Humanity to lend a hand with hunger, housing, and education needs in our community and world.

If you are a member of Calvary, we hope that you will use our Community Outreach Calendar to put your faith into action, live the greatest commandment, and be a disciple of Christ in 2024.

Some of our Community Outreach Projects...

My Father's House

My Father's House is a faith-based transitional housing program that provides an interim solution for families who find themselves facing homelessness in Cabarrus - and southern Rowan counties.

Families can reside in this program for up to six months.

Calvary provides meals for a week four times a year.

CVAN

CVAN (Cabarrus Victims Assistance Network) provides safety, shelter and support for battered women and their children in Cabarrus County, NC.
Since 1982 - building a world where every home is a safe home.

Calvary collects needed items to support the CVAN home. There is a red drop-off box in the narthex labeled CVAN where you can drop off items.

CVAN runs the CVAN's Cool Used Stuff store located at

During January, 2024 we collected items for CVAN (Cabarrus Victims Assistance Network), our local domestic abuse shelter. CVAN has provided safety, shelter and support for battered women and their children in Cabarrus County, NC. since 1982 - building a world where every home is a safe home.

Calvary Cares

Thanks to everyone who has given to our Calvary Cares fund to support those who come to us with needs for food, gas, lodging, or power bills.

We have recently had a surge in requests for help with food and also with those who are living out of their cars. If you have the ability to share a gift with Calvary Cares now or during the year, it will go to real needs in our community.

If you are a member of Calvary and you use the Calvary App to manage your giving, you can specify a gift to Calvary Cares by selecting Other for the fund name and typing in Calvary Cares in the field labeled Add a Note at the bottom of the screen.

Right now (January, 2024), please pray for Eric and his two elementary school age children. They are living out of their van. Pray for open hearts and doors, so that they can find shelter.

Blood Drives

Calvary hosts two blood drives a year in partnership with the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas.

Angel Tree

Calvary partners with CCM (Cooperative Christian Ministry) to provide Christmas gifts to families in need in our community. Angels are adopted, gifts bought and then the families pick up their gifts and a plated meal the week before Christmas.

Adult Mission Trips

Calvary sends teams of adult volunteers to help in areas devastated by natural disasters. Wehave also worked on housing at Lutheridge, our camp in the NC mountains.

Teams have worked in New Orleans, Louisiana, Eastern and Western North
Carolina. Work includes helping rebuilding homes so they can once again be occupied and upgrading camp cabins.

Winecoff School Mentoring

Calvary has a mentoring program with Winecoff Elementary School. Participating as a mentor requires a limited and very flexible investment of time. Volunteers can spend 30-45 minutes with students on a weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly basis.

Mentors can volunteer to be a lunch buddy, classroom companion for reading or math, or a combination. Your participation can provide the students with positive influences or relationships, which for some may otherwise be quite limited.

Please contact the church office if you are interested in learning more about this program.

Reach out to volunteers Gaylene Butch, Pastor Debbie, Harold Smith, Kathi Hissong, or Gary Norris to learn more about their volunteer experiences.

Winecoff School Blessing Box

Part of Calvary's support of Winecoff Elementary School is the Blessing Box, which is a small pantry located at the school.  Winecoff families who need some assistance can find food items here to help provide a nutritious meal.

A drop box for your donations is located in the narthex for collection of unexpired, non-perishable food items to stock this Blessing Box.

Please contact Cecilia Maxwell if you would like additional information.

Drop Boxes in the Narthex

You can drop items for the Blessing Box and CVAN in the collection bins that are kept in the narthex (see picture...that's Nancy at the desk!)
