Professor Robert Keegan of Harvard University once described “walking” as “controlled falling.” In other words, when we walk, when we take a step forward, we give up a bit of our balance. Perfect balance is possible by standing still, but human beings are not meant to stand still. So, our aim in life, then, cannot be to achieve perfect balance but to avoid going too far out of balance—or being pushed off balance by outside forces. Unbalanced car wheels can lead to accidents. Unbalanced people can create havoc in their own lives and in the lives of others. This holds also for the spiritual dimension of our lives. When people of faith don’t take proper precautions, today’s reading from Galatians calls it “dressing in an adult faith wardrobe,” they become prone to committing “the sin of losing their spiritual balance.” Today’s message explores some of the preventive steps we can take to avoid committing the sin of losing our spiritual balance.
