In today’s readings we find guidance for acting generously. In the reading from Chronicles, David praises God and acknowledges that everything belongs to, and comes from, God. The Psalm also lists the glorious attributes of God and God’s generous actions towards God’s people. It ends by declaring that those who are blessed by God become blessings for others through their generosity.

The theme, “generosity,” --both human and divine--is at the center of the reading from Second Corinthians. God provides abundant blessings; God’s people share—voluntarily and cheerfully—in abundant ways. The basic principle is that those who sow bountifully will also reap bountifully. Blessings shared and riches given away will return in some way. Finally, the Gospel has some powerful spiritual wisdom: invest in heavenly treasures that cannot be taken away, i.e. use your money in a God-pleasing way. As Jesus put it: “where your treasure is, there your heart shall be also.”
